Code green for our new pin boxes

Our ATMs are inside shops, outside in a wall or in a so-called PIN box. This is a free-standing building with one or more ATMs for withdrawing notes and often an ATM for business deposits. In summer, the temperature inside the PIN box can rise considerably. This affects both the machines and the Brink's employees who maintain and service the machines. That is why all our new PIN boxes are covered with a sedum roof. The green sedum roof reduces the ambient temperature of the roof.

Every degree counts 'In early 2023, we started installing sedum on our pin boxes. Currently, we have already had 24 locations with sedum roofs. That's almost 180 m2,' says Remko Wagemakers of Geldmaat. 'The insulating effect of a sedum roof makes it a lot less warm inside the pinbox.' Brink's joins in, Roxane de Bruin, Key account manager banking at Brink's: 'For our people it is not nice when it gets too hot inside the pinbox, then every degree lower is one.'

Laying the roofs is done by Utrecht-based company TopGroen. 'A green roof draws heat from the environment and the plants retain moisture. A roof without sedum can get as hot as 90 degrees in summer. A roof with sedum is no more than 5 degrees warmer than the outside temperature, which affects the inside temperature,' explains Daniël director of TopGroen.

Good for the environment Building sedum roofs is also good for the environment.'Sedum roofs retain CO2, capture fine dust and increase biodiversity,' says Daniël.
Remko: 'A sedum roof captures an average of 1.23 kg CO2 per m2 per year. With all our locations combined, that's about 220 kg on an annual basis'. The environmental aspect is also important to Brink's. 'Investing together in the environment is something we like to make a budget for,' says Roxane.

Good for the environment Good for the temperature and for the environment, but there is another reason why we put sedum roofs on our pinboxes and that is the environment. Remko: 'Pinboxes with a sedum roof look nicer. The appearance of a pinbox is not often appreciated by local residents. Such a box immediately looks a lot nicer.'
